The Iberê Camargo Foundation is the first building by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza in Brazil, it is intended that the space should not only function as a place for the permanent exhibition of the work of Iberê Camargo, but also as a real cultural centre in which courses, temporary exhibitions, seminars and studies about contemporary artistic production should take place.

The building, which occupies a total area of 8,250 m², including a car park for 100 vehicles, was built at Avenida Padre Cacique, in land cut into a hillside facing the Guaíba river. The project makes use of advanced technology, and has determined a special type of concrete to maximize the durability and beauty of the building.

The new headquarters of the Iberê Camargo Foundation comprises 9 exhibition rooms, distributed over three floors, alongside a large space on the first floor, which totals about 1300m² available for the permanent display of Iberê's paintings, prints and drawings. In addition to these spaces, the design includes a cafeteria, a shop, a research and documentation centre, and an auditorium. Two studios are also proposed: one dedicated to intaglio printing, and another used by the Foundation’s educational programme to develop its activities.

It is worth pointing out that the project is environmentally responsible. It has low energy consumption and a small sewage treatment station. There is also concern for the conservation and security of the works. The technical specifications of the project conform to the strictest international requirements for the security of the collection.
