The Iberê Camargo Foundation was founded in 1995 with the aim of conserving and divulging the work of this important Brazilian artist. As well as bringing the public closer to the work of one of the great masters of 20th century art, the institution also seeks to encourage reflection upon contemporary artistic production.
Every year there are exhibitions, workshops, seminars, meetings with artists and a variety of studies on the work of Iberê Camargo and subjects related to contemporary art. The intention is not only to disseminate the artistic and intellectual legacy of Iberê Camargo, but also to promote a systematic reflection upon contemporaneity and artistic practice.
The New Building
With a temporary base in the house in which the artist lived in Porto Alegre, the Foundation is working on the creation of the Iberê Camargo´s New Building. Designed by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, the project received the Golden Lion award at the 2002 Venice Architecture Biennial.
Schools programme
The Iberê Camargo Foundation collection is shown to the public annually through temporary exhibitions. The displays are especially developed to serve the public taking part in the schools programme, the Foundation's educational project.
The Cataloguing project
Amongst its activities the Foundation is co-ordinating the project of Cataloguing the work of Iberê Camargo, which is developing wide documentation and research into the artistic and intellectual output of the artist, and also documents telling us about his life and work.
